Are Mexicans in general, more Aztec, or more Spanish?
Read my question:
Mexico is the melting pot of two great warlike people, the Aztecs, and the Spanish. Thus Mexico is a proud mestizo nation. But is Mexico and the mestizos overall more Aztec or more Spanish? Do the people in Mexico (not in U.S.) resemble those of Extremadura and Andalucia, or the original inhabitants of Meso America? I am asking mostly about dialect, actual racial ancestry, culture and cuisine.
Note: I am fully aware that Aztecs were not the only civilization in Mexico, but they were the dominant one, and I would like it if you inform me on things about the Maya, and other tribes, and their impact on the people of Mexico as well. If you could give sources that will be well appreciated.
First of all, let me tell you we Mexicans HATE people to refer to them as indians, you guys do not call the ottawas or cheyenne indians do you? You’re speaking of the prehispanic most advanced civilization in the American Continent. Show a little more of respect please.
I’ll tell you some Aztec culture influences on our life:
The food is around a 70 % Aztec food. You should know the Tlahtohuani (Aztec Emperor)
had a new dish almost every week. The pozole (potzolli), cempaxochitl cake, ahuacamolli , azcamolli, molli (mole), atolli, etc etc, are some examples of Aztec cuisine.
In school we are tought that about 10% of our spanish comes from the Aztec language, for example: Cuate, atoyadero, metate, aguacate, jitomate, chocolate, coyote, mecate, etc etc.
The dead people’s day tradition is also Aztec.
Out of these everything else is Spanish culture. For example?
The terrible manners (I’m serious) . Among Aztecs, flowers were a symbol of strenght, sublime worlds, among nowadays Mexicans it is considered as it has ever been in the Spanish culture, a symbol of “women’s weakness”. By the way, among Aztecs, women were half godess (human life begins inside them, the women who died on birth were considered warrior godess, as the warriors who died in combat) among Spaniards they’re just…
Just search us Mexicans now, we have the same Spanish society problems.
