Gibraltar â € "A piece of Britain in the Mediterranean

Known as â € ~ La Rocka € ™, Gibraltar is an little bit of Britain in the Mediterranean. Ownership of this small piece of land has long been a sensitive issue with the neighboring Spanish. In mythology Greek, Gibraltar (Calpe) was one of the Pillars of Hercules, marking the entrance to the Mediterranean. The northern coast of Africa is only 14 miles away and can be seen at Europa Point, Gibraltar as a place of strategic importance. Great Britain took control of the Rock in 1713 and was formally declared a colony in 1830. Also it was here where the HMS Victory is being repaired after the Battle of Trafalgar before returning to Britain with Nelson € ™ s body. In 2002, there where a local referendum overwhelmingly rejected any involvement of Spain in their government.

The locals are proud to be British citizens while on the Rock, which is under any illusion that it is anything but British. Street names such as â € œWinston Churchill Avenueâ €, ATMs churn out £ 10 notes (the right ones, not like Scotland), familiar names from the main street as Marks & Spencer's portraits Queen in hotels, bars like the â € œLord Nelson € .. you get the idea. The only concession that has been done is that traffic flows in right side of the road in the narrow and lack of signs of one-way system in Gibraltar.

Gibraltar airport is owned by the Ministry of Defence for use by the Royal Air Force as RAF Gibraltar. Civil flights share the track dissects Avenue Winston Churchill. This means that every time a plane lands or takes off, the Main Street must be closed to traffic for about 10 minutes. While this feature of Gibraltar is part of its charm, it also means that only a few flights day can land / take off without causing serious traffic disruption. A new airport is scheduled to give a large increase airport capacity and a tunnel under the runway will reduce congestion and delays. Once completed, the new airport of Gibraltar will give both Gibraltar and the Andalusia region of Spain a linking air better.

The military theme continues at the Military Heritage Centre where there is an array of artifacts housed in Princess Carolineâ Battery. € ™ s beleaguered City exhibition shows the terrible conditions to survive under British soldiers during the Great Siege and there is graffiti dating the 18th century.

The last point of interest in the Upper Rock is the Moorish castle dating from the 14th century. Located on the north-western side and the Homage Tower dominates the entrance to the land only to Gibraltar. Your entrance ticket to the National Park also gets into a more, the 100 Ton Gun found in the city.
