Holidays Andalucia Spain

Can you explain the importance of Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Andalucia, Spain?
Like, the whole point of the holiday. Thanks =)

holy week is most visiblally Catholic – Roman and Orthodox. it’s a time of strong introspective and worship of the Passion of Christ. while i’m not a Spaniard, in our Polish community we too have very strong, visable group gatherings with those most strongly participated in on Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday.
the week isn’t a holiday really. it’s as if you knew someone you loved and admired wa dying and you knew the exact time – how would you prepare. they do this in honour of all Christ sacrificed. Our Holy Thursday is a beautiful tradition and lasts for hours when men, then women, then both (all can attend any time but….) staying in church and praying with Christ as if during His agony in the Garden. we try to be mindful and “stay awake” until His disciples. i always enjoyed going with my mom to the womens prayer hour once i was old enough. we would pray silently, together and sing Polish and English hymns. there would be others there – men too but the “group thing” was done by the women and then the men – just as tradition goes. it’s a wonderful time in the Catholic church and i enjoy it more then CHristmas, which has become too commercial IMO.
